Scouting for Food

As Scouts, we believe in serving our communities and giving back.We would like to ask you to help us in our Scouting for Food project. Scouts will receive a flyer stating the food needs of people in Alabama along with grocery bags.

This is the first time in years that we have conducted a council-wide Scouting for Food drive. We will also be joined by the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama.

We ask that you go door-to-door in your unit's neighborhood or at a local store to pass out bags on Saturday, November 4. Then on Friday, November 10 and Saturday, November 11 Scout Units will go back and collect the bags that contain donated food items.

We will be focusing on our Veterans. During the Veteran's Day Parade in Birmingham and Huntsville, we will ask that units that participate in the parades ask for donations along the routes.

Barber Museum - Engineering Merit Badge

The Barber Museum in Birmingham, Alabama is now offering a program to fulfill the requirements of the Boy Scouts of America Engineering Merit Badge.  This program is on the move from start to finish and includes a hands-on Build-a-Bike activity, a tour of the largest motorcycle collection in the world, and a short film.  With stunning views of the Barber Motorsports Road Course, vehicle exhibits, and restoration shop, the museum offers a thrilling environment in which to learn about the field of engineering.
This opportunity costs $15 per Scout, and we ask that Scouts be prepared by reading the Engineering Merit Badge book prior to their troop’s scheduled visit. To show pride in your troop and demonstrate your participation as a Scout, we ask that Scouts wear their uniforms.

Backpack Camp Sequoyah!

If your Scouts are starting to backpack, there is no greater place to go than Camp Sequoyah! Camp Sequoyah offers a 10-mile trail that is great for Scouts to start out on.

Camp Sequoyah also is a great place to set up a base camp if your units would like to hike the Pinhoti Trail system in nearby Talladega National Forest.

Intro to Backpacking

Fall is here and many crews and troops will be getting ready to hike some trails! The Greater Alabama Council is partnering with Alabama Outdoors to offer a great evening of learning the basics of backpacking. The event will start at 6:30 PM and go until 8:00 PM. The clinic will be taught outside so please bring a camp chair.  We're hoping to have a food truck come by as well.

Topics in the clinic will be:
• How to pack a backpack
• How to put on a backpack/ fit properly
• Features of different styles of backpacks
• Pro and cons between down and synthetic sleeping bags
• Air vs foam sleeping pads
• Q & A at the end or shop for gear in the store

The clinic will be taught by Alabama Outdoor's Hardgoods Ambassador, William "Cola" Wells. He is a Wilderness First Responder, guide, and thru-hiker. He has hiked both the 2,200-mile-long Appalachian Trail and the 2,660 mile-long Pacific Crest Trail. He also spent a season as a volcano guide in Antigua, Guatemala.

The Homewood Store is located: 3054 Independence Drive,  Homewood, AL 35209
